Description

A remarkable 1970s Paganne by Gene Berk maxi dress rendered in dramatic black and ivory, with an intricately engineered print of stylized glyphs, geometric borders, calendar-like medallions and monumental graphic motifs.

This is Paganne at its most visually commanding.

Rather than allowing the print to fall randomly across the garment, the design is carefully positioned to follow the architecture of the dress. A densely illustrated yoke circles the high neckline, narrow graphic bands travel down the sleeves, a continuous border defines the waist, and oversized medallions sweep across the skirt. The result is almost architectural—every line directs the eye and emphasizes the long, lean silhouette.

The fitted bodice gives way to a floor-length skirt with a side slit, balancing the extraordinary surface design with an elegant, remarkably wearable shape. In stark black and white, the imagery becomes nearly hypnotic from across a room while revealing layer after layer of detail at close range.

A true statement maxi from one of the defining American print houses of the era.

Curator’s Note

Gene Berk understood something few designers did quite as well: a printed textile could become the architecture of the garment itself.

Here, the imagery does not merely decorate the dress—it constructs it. The broad illustrated collar creates a visual necklace around the shoulders. Narrow borders articulate the arms and waist. Vast circular motifs emerge across the skirt almost like fragments from an enormous illustrated manuscript.

The near-monochrome palette makes the effect even stronger. Without competing color, every symbol, border and line becomes visible, turning the dress into an extraordinary study in scale, placement and graphic rhythm.

Pieces like this are why Paganne remains so collectible. It is unmistakably of its era without feeling trapped in it.

Complete the Look

Let the print remain the jewelry.

Pair with a sleek black boot or tall fitted leather boot and keep accessories minimal—a single sculptural silver cuff, small geometric earrings or nothing at all. For evening, add a long black coat or cape and a structured clutch.

For a more editorial 1970s look, style with oversized dark sunglasses and a strong platform boot.

The dress has enough presence to carry the entire look on its own.
