Description
A spectacular 1970s Wenjilli maxi dress in a richly shimmering bronze metallic knit. Made in Hong Kong from a remarkably luminous blend containing 22% metallic fiber, the dress catches light across its entire surface while maintaining a sophisticated, beautifully restrained palette.
The silhouette is long and statuesque, with a high ribbed neckline, fitted long sleeves and an extraordinary wide ribbed waistband that draws dramatically inward at the natural waist. Deep ribbed cuffs finish the sleeves with a subtle flare, while the skirt falls uninterrupted to the floor.
The combination of metallic textile and sculptural knit construction gives this piece tremendous presence without relying on ornamentation—a particularly elegant expression of 1970s evening dressing.
Curator’s Note
The textile is the revelation here.
With metallic fiber comprising 22% of the fabric, the bronze shimmer isn’t applied decoration—it is integral to the construction of the dress. Under evening light, the surface shifts beautifully between chocolate brown, copper and gold.
But the defining design feature remains that extraordinary ribbed waist. Wenjilli used the structure of the knit itself to create shape, repeating the ribbing at the neckline and cuffs to turn a deceptively simple column dress into something architectural.
