A spectacular vintage velvet cape in the deepest wine-burgundy, richly embroidered in jewel tones of emerald green, vivid rose and antique gold.

The embroidery is extraordinary. Rows of geometric motifs sweep across the velvet in repeating triangular formations, punctuated by smaller stylized floral designs. Against the dark velvet ground, the colors seem almost illuminated—like panes of stained glass glowing after dark.

Cut in a dramatic, generously flared silhouette, the cape falls beautifully around the body while allowing the embroidery to be seen from every angle. At the neckline, a matching velvet tab closes with an oversized square buckle, creating a wonderful little 1970s finishing detail.

The effect is romantic, theatrical and unmistakably vintage without becoming costume. Worn over a simple black dress or wide-leg trousers, it becomes the entire look.

Curator’s Note

Some vintage pieces are beautiful because of their construction. Others are beautiful because they seem to create their own atmosphere.

This cape does both.

What stopped me was the relationship between the embroidery and the velvet. Against that deep wine ground, the jewel-toned threads don’t simply decorate the garment—they glow. Emerald, rose and antique gold appear almost suspended against the darkness.

It reminds me of walking into an old house or church at dusk, when the room has grown dark but the last light is still coming through the colored windows.

Wearable stained glass.

That is exactly what this cape feels like.

Complete the Look

Let the cape remain the focal point.

For evening, wear it over a long black velvet column dress or wide-leg velvet trousers with a fitted black top, allowing the saturated embroidery to emerge against an otherwise dark silhouette.

Add antique-gold earrings or a substantial cocktail ring, but resist the temptation to over-accessorize. The embroidered neckline and statement buckle already function almost like jewelry.

For a more relaxed 1970s look, pair it with a black turtleneck, dark flared trousers and tall boots. A small black velvet, antique-gold or metallic evening bag would finish it beautifully.

Hair can be equally dramatic—soft waves, a loose updo or a glamorous 1970s blowout.

The rule here is simple: everything else provides the darkness. The cape provides the light.
