Description
An elegant pair of antique women’s lace-up dress boots dating to the late Victorian–early Edwardian period, crafted in inky black satin with a sharply elongated pointed toe and curved French heel. The refined silhouette and fragile satin exterior place these boots firmly within the category of formal or evening footwear, rather than utilitarian or outdoor use.
The boots feature seventeen metal eyelets along the front, retaining their original placement and structure. The satin surface shows age-appropriate softening and gentle wear consistent with more than a century of preservation, while the overall form remains crisp and well defined—an uncommon survival for satin footwear of this era. The interior is canvas-lined, with leather soles and heels.
Due to their age and material, these boots are best suited as a collector, study, or display object, rather than modern wear. The original boot laces are included; the laces shown in some photographs are for display only.

Curator’s Note
Satin footwear from the turn of the 20th century survives far less frequently than leather examples due to the inherent fragility of the material and its limited intended use. Boots such as these were worn selectively—often indoors or for carriage arrival—and many were discarded once the satin showed wear. The preservation of form, silhouette, and structural integrity seen here makes this pair particularly suitable for archival reference or display. Objects of this type are increasingly collected not for wear, but for their ability to illustrate period construction, social customs, and the material culture of women’s dress at the close of the Victorian era.
