Description
One of the most unusual textile pieces to pass through the archive, this full-length gown was created from hundreds of hand-stitched antique yo-yo quilt circles in a mix of florals, feed-sack prints, ginghams, stripes, and pastel cottons.
The silhouette is long and column-like through the body before opening into a dramatic trailing hem densely covered in layered yo-yos. Open areas between the appliqués allow light to pass through the piece, giving it an almost lace-like effect despite the folk-art construction. The shoulders are softly draped with scattered appliqué work continuing across the neckline and upper back.
Both wearable art and textile object, the gown carries the feeling of Depression-era and wartime quilting traditions reimagined into a theatrical statement piece. Every fabric circle is slightly different, creating a surface rich with small-scale prints, faded feed-sack florals, and hand-gathered texture.
Curator’s Note
This piece sits somewhere between garment, folk textile, and installation art. Antique yo-yo quilts were traditionally made from fabric remnants and feed-sack cottons, often stitched slowly over long periods of time by hand. Seeing that language translated into a full gown is exceptionally rare.
What makes the dress especially striking is the tension between delicacy and abundance — airy openwork across the upper body contrasted with the dense cascade of yo-yos pooling toward the hem. It reads almost like confetti, petals, or paper lanterns suspended in motion.
The irregularity is part of its beauty. No two sections are exactly alike, and the slight fading, variation in prints, and hand construction give the piece warmth that could never be replicated by modern production. Satin slip shown on mannequin underneath dress is not included.
