This Victorian black mourning dress is fashioned from a beautiful woven floral fabric that reveals itself only when the light catches it. At first glance the dress appears almost entirely black, but look closer and the pattern begins to emerge from the shadows.
The bodice is softly gathered and closes with a double snap closure at the neckline and hook-and-eye closures down the front. Delicate net ruffles frame the collar and cuffs, adding just enough softness to the otherwise dark and dramatic silhouette.
While photographing this dress in the salon, one image stopped me in my tracks. The back of the dress was illuminated by the warm glow of a lamp and suddenly it looked as though it had stepped from the pages of a Victorian ghost story. The floral pattern appeared where moments before there had only been darkness.
A remarkable antique garment with an undeniable presence.

The best pieces are the ones that make you pause.
This dress did exactly that.
I love black textiles because they rarely reveal everything at once, and this one is especially beautiful. The woven floral pattern hides beneath the surface until light touches it. The net ruffles at the neckline and cuffs feel delicate and almost ethereal against the dark fabric.
The interior construction shows its age and history, reminding us that this was once a garment made for everyday life, not simply something created to survive into the future.
Standing in the salon under warm evening light, it felt less like a dress on a mannequin and more like a figure quietly waiting in the corner of an old house.

Condition
Excellent antique condition. The dress retains its original silhouette, textured fabric, net ruffle trim, and front closures. There is one small hole to the underside of the left lace cuff that is not noticeable when worn or displayed. Age-appropriate wear to the interior lining is present and consistent with an authentic antique garment.
