Description
An antique Edwardian cotton combination step-in dating to the early twentieth century, made from lightweight white cotton with embroidered eyelet work, open insertion details, and soft satin ties at both the neckline and waist. The front bodice closes with buttons, while the divided lower construction and gathered shape reflect the layered dressing system of the period.
Pieces like this were designed to simplify dressing by combining multiple undergarments into a single piece, reducing bulk beneath fitted silhouettes. Decorative details were still considered important — embroidered work, ribbon ties, and delicate finishing appearing in garments intended largely for the wearer herself.
Beautiful as a textile study, display piece, or addition to a collection of antique whitework garments.
Curator’s Note
Historic undergarments often carried an unexpected amount of detail. Even pieces hidden beneath clothing were made with embroidery, handwork, and small decorative touches that gave everyday dressing a sense of care. The satin ties and embroidered eyelet work here add softness to a garment that was originally created for practicality.
