Description
Early 20th-century white cotton nightgown featuring extensive pintucking, embroidered whitework details, and a generous gathered silhouette. The neckline is framed by a wide embroidered collar with cutwork eyelet details, while full sleeves finish in embroidered cuffs that mirror the collar’s patterning. Soft volume through the body creates movement and drape typical of antique sleepwear from the Edwardian era.
Designed as both a practical and decorative garment, the fine pintucks and whitework embroidery transform a simple cotton nightgown into a study in domestic craftsmanship and handwork.
Curator’s Note
White cotton garments carried an enormous amount of labor. Even pieces intended for private use often received careful embellishment through pintucks, embroidery, and decorative finishing techniques. This example retains much of that character through its detailed construction and generous silhouette. Age-related wear is present at the collar/neck closure area consistent with antique textiles and has been photographed for accuracy. A single missing button on the front is also visible.
