Description
A soft and delicate early 20th-century whitework dressing ensemble consisting of a cotton corset cover and matching petticoat skirt. The corset cover features embroidered lace panels, gathered shaping, and gentle ribbon details, while the skirt falls into a full silhouette with soft movement and a decorative lower tier.
Pieces like these belonged to the quiet rituals of dressing during the Edwardian period — layers worn beneath clothing but often made with remarkable care and detail. Even hidden garments carried embroidery, lacework, and hand-finished touches.
This set remains beautifully displayable and still retains the romantic feeling of historic dress, with age and wear consistent with its history.
Curator’s Note
White cotton often carried an enormous amount of work. These everyday layers were washed repeatedly, repaired when needed, and intended for years of use rather than a single season. The surviving details — lace panels, gathered shaping, and delicate finishing — feel less like decoration and more like evidence of care.
Time has left its marks here, but the character remains.
